Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for alleged drunken driving between April 18 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in crashes and three were younger than age 21.
Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for alleged drunken driving between April 18 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in crashes and three were younger than age 21.
So far there have been 341 DUI arrests this year, up from 299 during the same period of 2015, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Kona officers have arrested the most drivers at 134, which equates to 39 percent of motorists arrested for DUI on Hawaii Island this year.
During the week of April 18 through Sunday, Kona officers arrested nine motorists while Puna officers arrested five and South Hilo officers three, according to police. Puna and South Kohala officers arrested one driver in each district.
There have been 457 major accidents this year of which eight have been fatal. Those eight fatal accident resulted in nine deaths on the island’s public roadways.
